IV. Noise, Equivocation, and Semantic Ill-Formedness
In any transmission, the signal is attacked. Shannon defines "Noise" as unwanted perturbations—static or distortions—added to the signal during transit. When noise corrupts the data, it creates "Equivocation" (
In the human LAN, this noise is generated internally through "Semantic Ill-Formedness" and "Incongruity".
- The Deletion Void: When a human transmits a sentence with missing data (e.g., "I'm scared"), they act as a faulty transmitter. This forces the receiver into a state of Equivocation—they must guess what was deleted ("Scared of what?").
- Fuzzy Functions (Buffer Overflows): The human biocomputer has different sensory drivers (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic). When a user experiences Synesthesia or a "Fuzzy Function," they are routing data from one channel into another incorrectly—resulting in semantically ill-formed statements like "Cause-Effect" ("You make me angry") or "Mind-Reading" ("I know what you're thinking"). The individual is attributing their internal emotional response to external noise, abandoning control of their own servo-mechanism.
- Double Binds: If a client transmits a quiet, controlled verbal message while simultaneously displaying physical rage, they are emitting an "inconsistent double message". Just as Shannon noted that a continuous signal requires parameters to limit its infinite variables, Bandler and Grinder show that incongruent analogical and digital signals crash the receiver's processing capabilities, creating a paradox.
V. The Metaprogrammer's Override (The Correction Channel)
To survive a noisy environment, Shannon's Theorem 10 dictates the necessity of a "Correction Channel"—an observer who sees the errors in the recovered message and transmits data back to correct the system.
In The Structure of Magic, the therapist is explicitly deployed as this Correction Channel. The therapist uses the formal algorithms of the Meta-model to detect linguistic noise and missing packets. When the therapist asks, "Who, specifically, scares you?", they are forcing the client's biocomputer to execute a Transderivational Search—plunging into its own deep structure to retrieve the deleted referential index.
The Meta-model does not care about "healing" the soul; it cares about restoring the missing parameters to the algebraic equation. By challenging the client's generalizations ("What stops you from trusting people?"), the therapist systematically reverses the lossy compression algorithms. The goal is to force the client to reconstruct the full Deep Structure, mathematically increasing their internal Entropy (freedom of choice) until the servo-mechanism has enough data to escape its fatal loop and resume optimal machinic homeostasis.
